GNU Typist (gtypist) is a free, terminal-based typing tutor for Ubuntu. It helps improve speed and accuracy through interactive lessons, drills, and custom exercises.

Installation

Open the terminal and run:

sudo apt update
sudo apt install gtypist

Check version:

gtypist --version

Usage

Start with:

gtypist
  • Use arrow keys to navigate, Enter to select, q to quit.

  • Lessons include beginner, intermediate, and advanced typing drills.

  • At the end of each lesson, it shows your speed (WPM) and accuracy.

Lesson Files

Default lessons are stored in:

/usr/share/gtypist/

Run a specific lesson:

gtypist /usr/share/gtypist/qwerty.typ

Custom Lessons

You can create your own .typ file with custom text and run it to practice.
